Peaceful Lentil Soup and Comforting Velveeta Sandwiches

Honestly, I didn't know what would hit me with the Comforting Velveeta sandwiches recipe. I knew that when I read the short story that accompanied it, "Native Foods," that it was basically a grilled cheese sandwich.

Today, my day off, I decided to cook the Velveeta sandwiches and Peaceful Lentil Soup ("Rising an Arab Father in America") for dinner while Mom and Duncan were off at work.

Abandoning the Wonder Bread the grilled cheese recipe called for was a no brainer (No offense meant, Diana). The purpose of this recipe is to instill nostalgia in the reader, and for me that meant spending an afternoon baking a loaf of homemade bread. For me and my childhood (as well as that of my siblings), this is what nostalgia means.

Although this recipe was too vegetarian for my brother's taste (he modified his grilled cheese to include some protein),  one thing that struck me was him saying, "OH YEAH, this is like Kraft cheese! This is exactly the comfort food I need right now!"

Velveeta cheese is exactly like eating Mac 'N' Cheese from the box. It's processed. It's a little too yellow. But it's something familiar. It is something from my childhood that I remember, and mostly from my Mac N Cheese era. Comforting food is something that I needed at the moment, even if it was to help me prepare for the next fresh hell that awaited me for the next Game of Thrones season that came to me tonight.

Although we didn't have the cumin for the lentil soup, it was still a great addition to the grilled cheese sandwich. I enjoyed this week very much, and this was a great comfort food for preparing myself for the Game of Thrones season 6 primiere.
